Lt. Van Heflin accepts Best Supporting Actor award (for Johnny Eager) from Gary Cooper. James Cagney accepts Best Actor award (for Yankee Doodle Dandy) from Cooper. Teresa Wright accepts Best Supporting Actress award (for Mrs. Miniver) from Joan Fontaine. Greer Garson accepts Best Actress award (for Mrs. Miniver) (first half of speech only). The banquet room. A service banner unfurls, showing the "number of men in service" (27,677). Lowell Mellett, chief of the Bureau of Motion Pictures, Office of War Information, speaks of the U.S. government's duty to keep the public informed without telling them what to think. The war is to save and perpetuate democracy, not destroy it; therefore the government is not going to enter the motion picture business ...
