Schrecker makes a convincing case that on the whole academia did not try very hard to stand up and defend the rights of professors who forced out of academia because of past or present associations deemed subversive. This remains the only work wholly devoted to understanding how faculty members, administrators, and professional associations (particularly the American Association of University Professors) dealt with the political witchhunts of the 1940s and 1950s.
