Abstract:

"The series of exhibitions I curated for the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery was built on the premise of showing the work of contemporary Inuit and Southern artists on an equal footing. This approach, which is not simply a matter of establishing equivalence, makes if possible to achieve fundamentally new insights into the stimuli and resources that produce artistic manifestations. The juxtaposition of work by different artists can serve to bring to light the viewer's preconceived ideas or biases regarding one artist or the other. Such a curatorial strategy engages the viewer as an active participant in the viewing experience and was the point of departure for the three individual exhibitions that evolved into a trilogy. In each exhibition, an artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) was paired with a Southern counterpart on the basis of works that I felt had synergy. The curatorial methodology was intuitive, visual, and improvisational, and the exhibitions became a complex consideration of six Canadian artists whose works resonated in very evocative ways. Each of the exhibitions intentionally positioned contemporary Southern and Inuit artwork together, and by extension, brought ideas of what is contemporary or Inuit into question for the viewer. My investigations of Inuit art have not only led me to see the work of Inuit artists in renewed contexts, but have also forced me to confront my assumptions of what Inuit art should and can be. Such a perspective also affects my understanding of the contemporary art I encounter in the South"--Page 10.
