Dramatization of hard times for farmers of North Dakota in 1915 and 1916 when foreclosures and attempts to control the grain market led to the formation of a grass-roots socialist organization called the Nonpartisan League, which eventually won political victories and helped reform marketing and banking monopolies that were ruining the farmers. Deals with first and second generation Scandinavian immigrants who migrated to North Dakota to farm and who encountered challenging economic conditions that led to their organization of the Nonpartisan League.
