Abstract:

Noted Cistercian breviary made for the Trappist monastery of Melleray. The manuscript begins with an unpaginated insert of 44 pages containing the office of the Blessed Virgin, In beatae Mariae. This is inserted in the front of the text rather than the following the section on the dedication of a church, where it is found in a Roman breviary, because the Cistercians preceded each canonical office with the In beatae Mariae, except at compline when it followed the office.

Following the insert the manuscript begins with the Proprium de tempore going from dominica ad vesperas through sabbato ad vesperas (p. 1-131); blank (p. 132), Commemorationes communis consisting of Maria (p. 133-138), SS. Benedictus, Bernardus, Robertus (p. 138-139), De pace (p. 139-140) and In omnibus festis (p. 140-141). Page 142 is blank.

Next are the commons of the saints with the Commune apostolorum (p. 143-162); p. 163 contains an unused section of text from the printed Roman breviary; next is the Commune unius martyris (p. 164-181) followed by a separate section for In festo S. Laurentii martyris (p. 181-183); Commune plurimorum martyrum (p. 184-199); followed by a blank p. 200.

The final section contains In dedicatione ecclesiae (p. 201-230); a section of Canticiae consisting of In festis apostolorum et evangelistarum (p. 221-223), In festis unius martyris et omnium confessorum (p. 223-225), In festis plurimorum martyris (p. 225-226) and In dedicatione ecclesiae (p. 227-230); Hymnus (230-349); In officiis votivis (350-352); De beata virgine antiphona (p. [353]-[359]); with p. [360] blank.
