In Notes from the Dog, Gary Paulsen gives insight into the power of enthusiasm and living life to the fullest.  Johanna, suffering from breast cancer, moves in next door to Finn, a 14 year old who doesn't feel he fits in.  Despite her illness, Johanna has a zest for life and manages to instill that in all those she comes in contact with.  Over the summer, Finn, his dad, friend Matthew, and grandpa learn to look beyond themselves with Johanna's encouragement.  Good discussion book for middle school and teens.  This is not a long book, so kids can easily handle it.  It is a book hard to put down and gets one thinking about his/her own views on life and death.  I highly recommend it.
