Abstract:

The collection contains fourteen letters; two poems (one about love, after 1837) and a verse from "Melanie" sent to Brantz Mayer, 22 September 1857, with an engraving of Willis; an autographed engraving from Graham's magazine; and one carte-de-visite of Willis ca. early 1860s by C.D. Fredricks. He writes to George Lunting, 22 August [1831], about co-editing and writing for the New York Mirror, with an integral printed sheet, 15 August 1831, announcing the cessation of the American monthly magazine and his association with the Mirror; to Mr. King, [4 February 1837], requesting permission for his servant to see the Indians in King's studio. Also, to Martin Shee, 21 June 1837, introducing landscape painter Thomas Doughty; to Abraham Hart, 16 August 1847, about publishing a volume of his poetry; to E.O. Palmer, 29 May 1855, about improving his home, "Idlewild," in New York; to Mrs. Meagher, Christmas 1855, about his trip to England and life at Idlewild.

Also, to Benson J. Lossing, 16 July 1859, about Lossing's upcoming visit to Idlewild; to C. Ferguson, 13 August 1863, about an essay Ferguson wrote and suggesting he write about noise in the cities, and devise a nom-de-plume; to Mrs. Gen. Viele, 10 March 1864, about his poor health and arranging to visit her; to J.B. Van Schaick, 14 February [no year], about his poor health and negative opinion of women; to an unknown editor, 17 March [after 1846], about publishing his prose, editorials in the Home Journal, and his health; to Miss Clarke, n.d., about an engraving from a portrait; to Mrs. Watts, [after 1836], about visiting her; to William Hayden, office of Boston atlas, 24 May n.y., denying authorship of a letter and suggests it was I.F. Otis.
