Notes: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902 and much of his work is set among the working classes of the area. Popular success came to him only in 1935 with "Tortilla Flat" and that book's promise was fulfilled in succeeding works, especially "The grapes of wrath", a novel so powerful that it remains among the archetypes of American culture. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1940 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He died in 1968.
