For all of history, the sea has been a source of great awe and respect for man. Its boundless beauty can instill a powerful sense of freedom or inspiration, while its mysterious creatures and unpredictability can simultaneously elicit a gnawing and undeniable sense of fear. In his book The Old Man and The Sea Earnest Hemingway has captured the profound relationship and interactions between one aged fisherman and the great sea that he has worked with all of his life.
Santiago’s relationship with the sea is one deeply rooted in respect. Though aged and learned, Santiago never takes for granted the gifts of the sea or the formidable strength it maintains no matter how passive it may appear. He never abuses its resources or kills its creatures without cause. He understands their beauty and natural right to life, and he acknowledges that in many ways he is only above them by means of technology. This attitude towards the sea is one that should be considered by all seafaring men and women, especially those within the Coast Guard. As America’s maritime protectors, it is our duty to recognize the strength, power, mystery, and beauty of this great sea that we patrol and vow to defend. There are few better writers than Hemingway to vividly remind us of the respect our oceans and waters truly merit.

The book is about an old fisherman, who is extremely unlucky. On his eighty-fourth day of not catching anything, he hooks a record size marlin. He fights for three days in order to reel the fish in. He is the only one on a small dingy with one bottle of water and enough bait to catch a small tuna and a flying fish. He holds onto the strained line without ever faltering. Finally, he is able to kill the fish and it is bigger than his boat, so he must tie it to the side. For an old man who can hardly stand straight he shows insurmountable determination. Unfortunately his journey back is perilous and sharks become his new enemy. Upon return the old man is only left with the magnificent skeleton, but he is completely content with his catch and life as a fisherman.
This book is worth reading because it is truly inspiring. This old man undergoes greater challenges then most people face in their lifetime. His determination is greater than anyone I know. I know that I could not sail to an unknown location while holding onto a line for day, with nothing to eat but the fish I caught and filleted. Hemingway also creates tremendous imagines throughout the novel.
As a future Coast Guard Officer I learned that I must be aware of how far out from port I am actually going. Even if I am chasing something great, I must learn when it is smart to come back. I also learned that it is possible to be so much stronger mentally than physically, that you can trick your body into doing almost anything strenuous. The Old Man and the Sea is a novel that captures life at sea, and it tells the story of an almost heroic old man.
