Abstract:

Lagawier discusses his life, scholarly ventures, and community leadership activities. He studied the Talmud from an early age and pursued his studies in philosophy and languages throughout Europe. In 1924 he moved to Antwerp to carry on the family diamond business and in 1941 escaped with his family shortly before the Nazi takeover. He eventually settled in Seattle in 1943. Lagawier was a frequent lecturer in Judaism at the University of Washington. He taught religious school at Herzl congregation, served as Director of Jewish Education at the Jewish Community Center, and independently founded the Institute of Jewish Studies, where he taught non-profit classes from 1965 to 1969. Lagawier was also closely associated with the Zionist movement in Seattle, serving as president and secretary of the Seattle Zionist Council. He was one of the founders of the Western Washington Conference of Rabbis, and discusses the group activities and several of the rabbinical and Talmudic questions that arose in the Conference. He also discusses the Seattle area rabbinical community in general, and talks about many individual rabbis he has known, particularly the Herzl, Bikur Cholim, and conservative rabbis. He brings up some of his scholarly interests and gives his opinions on various issues of Jewish philosophy and Talmudic law. He also mentions the Kline Galland Home; Lagawier served on the Home's Consulting Committee.
