Abstract:

Sommer discusses growing up in Rush City, Minn., his early career in the banking profession, student life at the University of Minnesota and later association with the Alumni Association, his WWII service in the Navy, the Minneapolis Dunkers, the Minneapolis Park Board, his work as president of Security State Bank in Owatonna, Minn., Republican Party fund raising and political involvement, sports events for the 1958 Statehood Centennial, his term as state senator (discussing in some depth the decision to move to annual legislative sessions and the liberal/conservative balance), his term as American Bankers Association president and other banking activities, involvement with the Lutheran church and the Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Co., promotion of Radio Free Europe, Minnesota Birthday Celebration, Minnesota Citizens Council on Delinquency and Crime, U.S. Savings Bond program, and his family.
