Fragment:
Tragic opera which takes place in Cyprus in the late 15th century. Otello, governor of Cyprus, returns victorious from battle with the Turkish fleet. His ensign, Iago, jealous of the promotion Otello has bestowed on Cassio, gets the latter drunk with the help of Rodrigo, a nobleman. The resulting brawl provokes the angry Otello to cancel the promotion of the disgraced Cassio. Through a series of cunning maneuvers, Iago suggests to Otello and seems to prove a liaison between Desdemona, Otello's wife, and Cassio. Recalled to Venice, Otello succumbs to his rage and strangles Desdemona. Iago's wife Emilia protests Desdemona's innocence, and word arrives that the dying Rodrigo has revealed Iago's treachery. Iago escapes and Otello kills himself.
