Overland to California in 1847 is an edited series of letters written en route to California, west from Independence, Missouri, to the Editor of the Joliet Signal between May 18, 1847, and August 29, 1848 by Chester Ingersoll. They have been edited for publication by Douglas C. McMurtrie with an introdutory note. Ingersoll was a reporter who documented with clarity and accuracy the condition of the 78 wagon wagon train, its splits, problems, travails and encouragements.
