Carl Sagan's interdisciplinary approach to presenting science to the general public never fails to delight and inspire. His book Pale Blue Dot is more astronomy-heavy than some of his other bestselling publications, but he manages to squeeze in politics and common sense with true Carl Sagan style. There are two basic messages to this book. The first is that we are in the first era of history in which we have the technology to annihilate ourselves and our species needs to wise up if we want to avoid creating our own destruction. The second is that humans should and must work toward achieving interplanetary habitation in order to survive the inevitable dangers to all planets, solar systems, and galaxies. The book goes into detail about the history of human space flight and then provides speculations on our future in space. Unlike Sagan's other books, which I would recommend to just about anyone, this book would be most enjoyable for readers who have some basic interest in or knowledge of astronomy.
