Abstract:

Documentary on the life and career of Gret Palucca (1902-1993), a German modern dancer, choreographer, and teacher. The program traces the course of her richly eventful life (for instance, she danced at the Olympic Games in 1936, lived through the Third Reich and the 1945 bombing of Dresden, saw the nationalization of the Palucca Schule Dresden in 1949, and received many honors in her later years). Her impact and legacy are explored through interviews with her colleagues, contemporaries, and former students. In the many film clips that illustrate this program, she is seen dancing in works by Mary Wigman, with whom she began her career ; performing her own choreography as a solo recitalist ; dancing with members of her company ; and teaching young dancers at the Palucca Schule Dresden and elsewhere.
