Abstract:

Collection includes correspondence, 1767-1823, personal accounts, diaries (concerning trips from Virginia to Kentucky to meet with land tenants), legal records, and other scattered materials of William Fleming (1736-1824), lawyer of Chesterfield County, Va., and judge of the Virginia Court of Appeals. Also, includes correspondence, 1857-1861, of Robert Conway Stanard (1833-1861), lawyer of Richmond, Va., and related materials concerning his service as captain of the 3rd Company of Richmond Howitzers of the Confederate States Army; personal and family correspondence, 1855- 1905, of his wife, Martha Virginia (Cowan) Stanard Wooldridge (1838-1920) and other scattered materials concerning her education, life as a widow, and service in the Confederate States War Department; and correspondence, 1859-1875, of her second husband, William Beverley Wooldridge (1827-1881), and related materials primarily concerning his coal mining business in Chesterfield County, Va., and his service with the 4th Virginia Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate States Army.

Also, includes correspondence, 1875-1930, of William Glover Stanard (1858-1933), historian and genealogist of Richmond, Va., and related records concerning his education at the College of William and Mary, service as corresponding secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, and involvement with the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (especially concerning the restoration of the Jamestown Church and the Jamestown Exposition of 1907); correspondence, 1894-1928, of his wife, Mary Mann Page (Newton) Stanard (1865-1929), and related materials concerning her career as an author and historian and her work with the Edgar Allan Poe Shrine in Richmond, Va.; and other scattered papers of members of the Fleming, Johns, and Wooldridge families.
