Abstract:

Papers of several generations of the Sullivan family of Maine, New Hampshire, and Boston, in particular John Sullivan's documenting his career as a lawyer in Berwick, Me. and Durham, N.H., including a casebook (1770); as a Brigadier-General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, including his defense of his actions at Staten Island for which he was questioned and honorably acquitted and his command of the American forces in Rhode Island; as a federal judge for the District of New Hampshire, including notes on cases heard (1784, 1786); and briefly as president (governor) of N.H. (1786-88, 1789-90). Other papers relate to James Sullivan, including a recordbook of the Committee of Operations of the Middlesex Canal; of his children George, William, and John L. Sullivan, and Mehitable Sullivan Cutler Amory; Jonathan Steele, including a ledger of his law firm of Clark and Steele; and other members of the Sullivan and Steele families. Additional correspondents include Henry Dearborn.
