Early correspondence concerns the real estate dealings of John Gillett and his partners Smith Tuttle and Horace Hotchkiss. They sold the town of Commerce to the Mormons, who renamed it Nauvoo. John Dean Gillett's papers are largely concerned with his real estate and livestock enterprises. Letters from Civil War soldiers express concern for their families who lease property from Gillett. The estate papers of Smith Tuttle, John Dean Gillett and Amarilla Sanford Gillett Tuttle are included. Genealogy research by Irene Harry Gillett Hill of the Harry, Pritchett, Montgomery, Crockett and Davis families is included.
