Abstract:

Consist primarily of the correspondence, 1924-1966, of Preston Davie (1881-1967) concerning the Preston family and genealogical notes regarding the Ballard, Brooke, Campbell, Dudley, Hampton, Hubard, Patton, Preston, Smith, and Wickliffe families.

Also, include papers of members of the Preston and related families. Items include speeches and a letter, 1774-1775, of William Preston (1729-1783) concerning Cherokee Indians in the Revolutionary War; correspondence, 1812-1841, of William Campbell Preston (1794-1860); correspondence, 1861-1864, of John Smith Preston (1809-1881) concerning his service in the Confederate States Bureau of Conscription; letters, 1878-1886, of William Preston (1816-1887); and correspondence, 1844-1862, of Charles Anderson Wickliffe (1788-1869) with James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, James Knox Polk, and John Tyler concerning, in part, the annexation of Texas.

Also, papers collected by Preston Davie. Items include a patent, 1750, issued for land in Augusta County, Va.; and rent rolls, 1773-1794, of the Northern Neck Proprietary of Virginia for Culpeper and Northumberland counties, Va.
