Abstract:

Account books, ledgers, and other business papers, chiefly of Elijah and Jason Williams, reflecting their ownership of general stores in Pomfret and later Providence and their involvement with coastwise shipping and West Indian trade; materials concerning Elijah Williams's activities as constable of the town of Pomfret; deeds and leases relating to properties owned by family members in Pomfret and Woodstock, Conn., and Northfield, Vt.; and papers of Jason Williams, including legal materials documenting bankruptcy, debt, his administration of several estates, and assignment to a Providence store, Barker and Weeden which failed in 1837, papers concerning his service with the militia and as gauger of casks in Providence, and notebooks (4 v., 1839-1863) recording local weather conditions. Also includes papers of other family members including Elijah's son, William Hilton Williams (ca. 1780-ca. 1800) concerning his student days at Rhode Island College; correspondence between Elijah Hilton Williams and his brother, Winthrop B., in South Carolina; and notebooks copied by Franklin Richmond Cushman containing copies of correspondence and biographical notes.
