Abstract:

Correspondence and miscellaneous papers, 1834-1837, of John Moffat Howe, principally pertaining to his activities as a clergyman in the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Principle correspondents include Bishop Edmund S. Janes and Rev. John M. Reid, Secretary of the Misionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Letters to and from Howe discuss such topics as church finances, professional activities and engagements, missionary activities in the United States, as well as personal matters pertaining to Howe's family, finances and health. also included are a number of church receipts and certificates. Additional correspondence and ephemera relate to Howe's dental and medical practice. Additional correspondents include: James B. Longacre, John L. Matthias, Adam Clark, and John's brother, George Howe. Also included is a manuscript, dated 1770, of a sermon written by Howe's maternal grandfather, Rev. John Moffat, as well as a collection of notes and sermons, 1834-1837, by English Wesleyan clergyman John Hodgeson, and a 31 page manuscript in which Howe describes his religious experiences and his decision to enter the ministry.
