Abstract:

Correspondence from constituents, much of it expressing pro-Union sentiment in the period just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, speeches delivered to Congress, election returns, political broadsides and handbills, as well as personal and family papers, deeds, will, genealogical material, clippings, photos, and other papers; together with papers of the Randolph family, consisting chiefly of letters (1844-1884) to Peyton Randolph (1833-1888), including those from his mother, Susan Armistead Randolph (1810-1884), giving detailed accounts of political and social life in Washington, D.C., in the 1850s, and letters (1850-1853) from Henry Force describing a surveying expedition to present-day New Mexico and Arizona; and papers (1771-1835) of James Clarkson, consisting chiefly of Albermarle County, Va., legal documents.
