Includes correspondence, 1792-1832 (81 items), of John Ambler concerning John Marshall, students at the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia, the Virginia militia, preventing slaves from assembling, the James River Company, and the War of 1812; accounts, 1797- 1836 (28 items), concerning in part Monumental Church (Protestant Episcopal), Richmond, Va.; deeds for land and slaves; lists of slaves at Mill Farm in Louisa County and at Westham plantation in Henrico County; and Virginia militia muster rolls and other materials, 1797-1814 (19 items).

Also include letters, 1830-1852 (10 items), written to Phillip St. George Ambler by family members, and by John Hartwell Cocke, Dr. Robley Dunglison, William Branch Giles, Robert Mills, Littleton Waller Tazewell, Henry St. George Tucker, and St. George Tucker, concerning business affairs at St. Moor plantation in Amherst County, Va., and the teaching of law; and scattered correspondence and accounts of other Ambler family members.
