Abstract:

Photostatic copies of documents concerning Innes' legal, political, and financial dealings in Virginia and Kentucky between 1784 and 1808.

Boxes 1, 3, and 4 contain papers from 1784-1795, relating to land sales (some with survey maps of the lots), house construction contracts, purchases of goods, and loans by one of Innes' clients, Gen. James Wilkinson. Box 4 contains correspondence relating to the legal disputes between Innes and Humphrey Marshall. Box 2 contains correspondence between Innes and Henry Knox, War Dept. Secretary, concerning the use of militia and scouts to defend the western frontier of Virginia along the Ohio River from hostile Indians; a memo and map defining boundaries of Cherokee land, established in a 1791 treaty; as well as letters from other correspondents such as John Brown, Virginia governor Beverly Randolph, and Gen. Arthur St. Clair. The papers in Box 5 are primarily business documents involving land sales and purchases, payment of debts, accounts, and commercial shipments of goods by Innes, Wilkinson, William Chambers, Gabriel Kinson, Levi Todd, and Hugh McIlwaine. Finally, in Box 6, there is a printed copy from Dec. 1793 of the "Remonstrance of the citizens west of the Allegany Mountains" addressed to the President and Congress by the Democratic Society of Kentucky, seeking unrestricted navigation of the Mississippi River for its citizens, and protection from hostile groups such as the Spanish, along with responses from various local political groups. Also included are papers and interrogatories from 1807-1808, relating to the allegations against Benjamin Sebastian that he took money from the Spanish government while serving as an appeals court judge, and charges against Harry Innes of helping Gen. Wilkinson send secret dispatches to the Spanish in New Orleans.
