Abstract:

Correspondence and other papers, mainly for the years 1842-1862, reflecting the various stages of Crawford's career: Georgia lawyer and legislator, U.S. Senator, Minister to France (1813-1815), Secretary of War, Secretary of the Treasury (1816-1824), and Presidential candidate (1824). Main interest centers in the papers bearing on American foreign relations, and on diplomatic and consular officials. Other papers relate to party politics and the routine business of Crawford's Cabinet offices. Three notable series of letters are those of James Monroe as Secretary of State and as President; of George William Erving as Minister to Spain; and of Christopher Hughes as Chargé d'Affaires to Sweden. Other correspondents include Albert Gallatin, Richard Rush, David Brydie Mitchell, Thomas Sumter, Jr., Jonathan Russell, William Short, William Brown, J. Cox Barnet, Joseph R. Ingersoll, R.G. Beasley, George Williams, William Wyatt Bibb, and Alexander Anderson.
