The collection includes cancelled checks recording the disbursement of Academy funds, 1870-1872, and two letters from Henry Howard, also relating to Royal Academy business. A series of letters received, 1881-1907, includes applications, supporting documentation, and testimonials for Academy pensions, annuities, and other stipends; also, a menu from the Royal Academy Club annual banquet, 1907.
Series I. Letters of submission and related correspondence from British artists and architects, 1827-1841, n.d.; 88 items. Letters, mostly signed and dated, accompanying submissions for exhibitions, together with related correspondence. The letters generally list the titles of the submissions and frequently include descriptions, sometimes detailed, of the works or provide other additional information. Requests or suggestions regarding the placement of works are occasionally made. Most of the items in this series relate to the exhibition of 1827.
Series II. Henry Howard: Letters, 1838-1839; 2 items. Letters of the Secretary of the Royal Academy to David Read concerning the membership of Sawry Gilpin.
Series III. Letters of submission from collectors for Old Masters exhibitions, 1870-1873, 1881; 1 lin. ft. Arranged alphabetically by collector. Letters to the Royal Academy from collectors, submitting or recommending paintings for the Old Masters exhibitions, and responses from collectors regarding paintings solicited by or offered to the Royal Academy, together with drafts of letters reporting Academy decisions. Almost all decisions were also indicated by the committee on the letter of submission. Many of the works submitted were refused. Letters from Lord Ashburton, Lord Dudley, and Mrs. Duff include inventories by room of paintings in their houses and other files include extensive lists. Many letters contain information about the provenance of the painting and a description of the work. Also included is occasional correspondence relating to the transportation, care, and insurance of the paintings. Fourteen letters are from Thomas Agnew & Sons, whose help was apparently sought in identifying owners of works by C.R. Leslie and Clarkson Stanfield for the 1870 exhibition, which included an extensive retrospective of their work.
Series IV. Minutes and internal correspondence concerning Old Masters exhibitions, (1865) 1870-1873; ca. 50 items. Drafts of minutes from meetings during October and November 1869, relating to the first Winter Exhibition of Old Masters, held in 1870. Included are the minutes of the first meeting regarding that exhibition, appointing members of the committee (C. W. Cope, S. A. Hart, F. Leighton, R. Redgrave), and containing a statement of the purpose of the exhibition: to continue the tradition begun by the British Institution, and to provide an opportunity for artists and others to see and study from the works of the masters, and benefit from "lessons which no other methods of inquiry could have supplied". This series includes papers relating to National Portrait exhibitions at the South Kensington Museum 1865-1868, and the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1867, some with changes indicated, used in preparation for the Old Masters exhibition, and drafts of forms and letters used. Also correspondence between various members of the committee and Sir Francis Grant, discussing submissions, placement of pictures in the galleries, and other matters relating to the exhibitions.
Series V. Cancelled checks, 1870-1872; ca. 200 items. Recording the disbursement of funds for taxes, pensions, and other purposes.
Series VI. Letters received relating to pensions, 1881-1907; ca. 60 items. Applications, supporting documentation and testimonials for Turner fund pensions, annuities or other Academy stipends from British artists and family members of deceased artists. Biographical information is furnished on several artists, including Edward William Cooke, William Took, Thomas Barrett, Paul Marny, Frederick Cowie, Reginald Easton and William Lake Price.
Series VII. Royal Academy Club: annual banquet menu, 1907; 2 items. Held in Greenwich. The menu is signed by British artists who were present at the banquet.
