Correspondence relating to family, health, real estate dealings, inheritance of slaves, children at boarding school and at University of Virginia, lectures by Barringer, his essays on the American Negro, and his efforts to be appointed U.S. secretary of agriculture, as well as correspondence with Booker T. Washington concerning education of blacks, letters relating to the controversy between Barringer and the alumni association of Virginia Polytechnic Institute during his tenure as the school's president, and papers concerning charges of financial mismanagement made against Robert J. Noell by the Radford Record; Barringer's memoirs; notes, drafts, speeches, and essays, chiefly by Barringer, relating to agriculture, history, medicine, prohibition, race, religion, the University of Virginia where he was professor of medicine, and a fire extinguisher invented by Barringer; legal and financial papers, commonplace book, medical casebook, engravings, theater broadsides, clippings, photos, and genealogical material relating to the Brandon, Graham, Hannah, Massey, Morrison, Spragins, Washington, and Woodson families. Includes papers of Rufus Barringer (1821-1895), Victor C. Barringer (1827-1896), and other family members.
