Abstract:

Chiefly correspondence (1837-1864) of Emerson, pertaining to his trusteeship of Fruitlands (a short-lived utopian community founded by Bronson Alcott in Harvard, Mass.), following the disbanding of its members, when Emerson took charge as Charles Lane's trustee and attempted to collect mortgage and interest payments, principally from Joseph Palmer; together with a ms. page (ca. 1880) from a sermon preached by Emerson on the life of Dr. George Ripley. Subjects detailed in the correspondence include Bronson Alcott, the literary club known as the Saturday Club, and a bill for the creation of a national academy of literature and art. Correspondents include John S. Dwight, William H. Furness, and James R. Lowell.
