Abstract:

Correspondence, family records, notebooks, research materials, mss. of writings, and other papers, relating chiefly to Cochran's biographical work on the military and political career of his step-father, Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900), Civil War general, governor of Ohio, U.S. secretary of the interior, U.S. representative, and educational administrator. The bulk of the papers consists of typewritten notes and extracts from newspapers relating to Cox and to military and political events from 1858 to 1871. Includes Cochran's unpublished biographies, The Political Correspondence of Major General Jacob D. Cox (1922) and Political Experiences of Major General D. Cox (1936); scrapbook (1860-1890) concerning musical and literary activities in Cincinnati, Ohio; and sheet music (ca. 1850-1880) by George Nelson Allen (1812-1877).
