Resumo:

Diaries, 1850-1881, daily accounts that include details of national and Illinois politics. Correspondence 1843-1888, includes letters from many prominent politicians and military people of the time including Andrew Johnson, Ulysses Grant, John A. McClernand, Edwin Stanton, Richard Yates, William Sidell, Samuel Pomeroy, Elihu Washburne, David Davis, Benjamin Curtis and many others. Topics include the 1856 and 1860 Republican Conventions, John C. Fremont 1861 proclamation, reconstruction policy, needed reforms in U.S. Indian policy. Letters from Admiral Charles Wilkes whom Browning defended in court martial, from Benjamin Ficklin accused of complicity in Lincoln's assassination and Browning's letter asking for Ficklin's release. Browning's 24 page defense of Johnson's reconstruction policies. Numerous papers related to his job as Secretary of the Interior.
