Abstract:

Correspondence series chiefly consists of letters received by Waters, including genealogical, personal, and miscellaneous business letters. Correspondents include James Arthur Emmerton, classmate at Harvard and subsequent genealogical research partner; John Tyler Hassam, member of New England Historic Genealogical Society who helped arrange for Waters's genealogical research in London, England, and John Ward Dean, librarian of the society; and Dr. Clayton A. Cowgill, surgeon general of North Carolina, whose letters describe medical procedures and organization of various North Carolina hospitals during the Civil War and Waters's work as his clerical assistant at that time. Genealogical papers series includes materials relating to George Washington and John Harvard; notes on the Crowninshield, Pingree, Potter, Waters, and Whipple families of Salem; legal materials concerning Waters's affiliation with New England Historic Genealogical Society; and materials of historical societies of which he was a member, including New England Historic Genealogical Society, Essex Institute, and Massachusetts Historical Society. Personal papers and Miscellaneous papers series document his interests in music, the classics, and natural history.
