Abstract:

Correspondence, memoranda, personal, financial, and legal papers, speeches, accounts, memorabilia, clippings, photos, and other papers. Chiefly personal and office correspondence, including letters written to Menefee while he was recovering from war wounds, many mentioning the effect of the great influenza epidemic on Luray, Va.; correspondence with his wife and family; correspondence relating to his positions as secretary (1932-1936) to A. Willis Robertson and administrative assistant (1936-1965) to Harry Byrd, Sr., concerning routine matters, engagements, speaking arrangements, trips, constituents' requests, and touching on state and local politics in Virginia, and on Byrd's campaigns. Includes statements of Menefee's accounts with Byrd; petitions for repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act; training materials, notes and field messages from active service in France, and other papers relating to Menefee's World War I service; and letter (1861) relating to recruitment of Confederate soldiers in Rockingham and Shenandoah counties, Va. Correspondents include J. Lindsay Almond, Harry F. Byrd, Richard E. Byrd, Alfred D. Barksdale, John Stewart Battle, Colgate W. Darden, Douglas Southall Freeman, B.P. Harrison, William S. Hildreth, Jay W. Johns, A. Willis Robertson, Strom Thurmond, William M. Tuck, and John J. Wicker, as well as numerous businessmen and friends in Luray.
