Abstract:

Correspondence; military records as an officer of the 13th New Jersey Volunteers during the Civil War; speeches; drafts of publicity articles for Murphy Varnish Company; biographical and genealogical information; certificates; and letters of condolence written to Murphy's daughter, Helen M. Kinney (Mrs. William B. Kinney), at the time of his death.

Murphy's correspondence consists primarily of personal letters, and letters congratulating him on his nomination for governor of New Jersey (1901); speeches concern such topics as immigration, penal reform, temperance and prohibition, tariff policy, and "Why the Farmer Boy Should Stay on the Farm." Includes letters of George W. Bates, George B. Cortelyou, John Cotton Dana, John F. Dryden, John R. Emery, Charles W. Fairbanks, James F. Fielder, John Franklin Fort, Joseph S. Frelinghuysen, William P. Frye, Wendell P. Garrison, Marcus A. Hanna, Garret A. Hobart, Henry Cabot Lodge (1850-1924), William Nelson, George W. Ochs, Cortlandt Parker, Mahlon Pitney, Austin Scott, Edward C. Stokes, Clement Studebaker, Eugene Vanderpool, Foster M. Voorhees, A. Pennington Whitehead, and William H. Wiley.
