Abstract:

Correspondence, speeches, obituaries, historical articles, newspaper clippings, programs, prohibition booklets and broadsides, memorabilia, and other papers, chiefly reflecting Perham's interests in Civil War history, veterans' organizations such as Society of the Army of the Potomac and Union Society of the Civil War, and his attempts to vindicate the reputation of General Gouverneur K. Warren and his conduct at the Battle of Five Forks. Also includes correspondence of Robert E. Cowart, Texas lawyer and Confederate war veteran, containing descriptions of such people and events as Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, World War I, and the Texas Ku Klux Klan; political correspondence of N.W. Preston, secretary of U.S. representative Dan V. Stephens, of Nebraska, and of George W. Merrill, Oklahoma politician and postmaster; historical materials relating to the town of Woodstock, Me.; and information pertaining to the 23rd Maine Infantry Regiment and 7th Maine Battery, with which Perham served during the Civil War. Correspondents include Charles Chaillé-Long, Joshua L. Chamberlain, Jack Crawford, Jefferson Davis, Hannibal Hamlin, O.O. Howard, Henry H. Humphreys, Nelson A. Miles, John S. Mosby, Thomas Munford, Thomas Rosser, Louis P. Shoemaker, and Perham family members.
