Abstract:

Correspondence, mss. of writings, notebooks, postcards, drawings, music, clippings, printed material, and other papers, of Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957), author, covering his youth in Baltimore, Md., his years at Haverford College and University of Oxford, and his literary life in Philadelphia, Pa., and New York, N.Y.; together with memoirs of his mother, Lilian Janet (Bird) Morley (ca. 1866-1939), journal of his brother, Felix Muskett Morley (1894-1982), journalist and educator, and two works by another brother, Frank Vigor Morley (1899-1980), publisher and author. Includes correspondence with publisher Joseph Lippincott chiefly relating to sales, promotion, and ideas for Christopher Morley's novel Kitty Foyle; mss. of Human Being (1932), The Ironing Board (1949), The Man Who Made Friends With Himself (1949), and Thorofare (1942); drawings by Muirhead Bone; ms. music of Ernest S. Colling and Jerome Kern, composers, with words by Christopher Morley; annotated typescripts of The Blue and the Gray and the prompt book for Trojan Horse; and holograph ms. by Ogden Nash.
