The collection includes diaries, correspondence and collected essays, articles and clippings. The diaries span Metcalfe's entire career as a churchman and are of especial historical interest for his years in the Solomons. The correspondence (Reel 7) deals almost exclusively with the Methodist Mission in the Solomon Islands. Other correspondence (Reel 9) is between Metcalfe and the general secretary for foreign missions of the New Zealand Methodist Church. The collected essays were written by Solomon Islanders in vernacular languages describing their lives, local events and people of importance, also annotated extracts from the Missionary review. Also included are articles, c.1930-1961 (Reel 10), descriptive newsletters, 1920-1950 (Reel 11) and newspaper clippings, c.1891-c.1905 (Reel 12) on the Solomon Islands.
