Series I. Letters received, (1874)1905-1919: An alphabetical file, by author or institution, of approximately 1400 letters addressed to Roll from members of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and others. Artists represented by a substantial number of letters include Leon Bonnat, Etienne Bricon, Jean Charles Cazin, Albert Marie Dagnaux, Pierre Emmanuel Damoye, Eugene Durnand, J.J. Rousseau, and Alfred Smith. Letters from Maurice Chabas include in depth discussions of his own symbolistic paintings and detail his philosophy of art. Most other letters regard exhibitions organized by the society and are written by those concerned with the placement of their works in the exhibition hall. Several artists ask Roll to view their paintings or sculptures before the Salon to offer advice, while others hope that he will use his influence with the jury to gain acceptance for their works into the Salons. Many letters are written to promote young artists or those who are not members of the society. A few files represent correspondence from French and foreign officials, art associations, and institutions (primarily concerning personal matters). Among these are notes from municipal councils in France (thanking Roll for paintings he has given to local museums) and letters relating to foreign exhibitions (significantly from the Vienna Secession and the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy). A file register is available. One hundred and eighteen
pieces are unidentified and appear at the end of the file.
Series II. Miscellaneous Society records, ca. 1897-1919: Approximately seventy pieces of internal correspondence and memoranda of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Much of this file consists of letters from Georges Manoury and E. Raguet, both officers of the society, concerning the administration of society business. These include membership rosters, meeting schedules and summaries, and exhibition checklists. Also included in this file are transcripts of testimonials given at a banquet in Roll's honor. There are also two copies of undated statements by a large number of artists concerning the direction of the national Salons, perhaps written at the time of the foundation of the society.
Series III. Personal letters, notes and related papers, ca. 1879-1919: Twenty personal letters, several addressed to a Madame Paquin; a 2 p. note on "La Mode sous la IIIe Republique [ca. 1901]," discussing the development of French arts since 1870 and mentioning the Expositions of 1878-1889; and miscellaneous clippings.
