Abstract:

These papers include correspondence, autobiographical data and writings, lectures, class notes, research data, material on scientific expeditions, unpublished manuscripts, slides and photographic prints, and diplomas and medals.

The correspondence (36 linear ft.), including professional, administrative, and personal letters, covers all aspects of modern paleontology, as well as evolutionary synthesis, science and religion, and creationism. Simpson is often most forthright in defense of particular positions in science, and on social and political issues as well. In addition, there are approximately nine hundred letters (1938-1947) from Simpson to his wife, Anne Roe Simpson, written while he was serving with the American army in North Africa and Italy.

The materials on his numerous scientific expeditions are particularly rich. There is much, for instance, on his work in Patagonia (1930-1931, 1933-1934), including many notes, manuscripts, and photographs. There is also documentation of his Venezuelan trip (1938-1939), with photographs keyed to field notebook indexes. Additionally, the carbon typescripts of Simpson's travel diaries (1930-1979) are also an important source of information.

Simpson's participation in professional societies was extensive, and there are materials pertaining to many of them in this collection, including the American Society of Zoologists (President), American Society of Mammalogists (President), Society for the Study of Evolution (Founder, President, 1940), and Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (President, 1942).
