Correspondence; galleys and proofs of McCasland's scholarly writings, including By the Finger of God (1951), The Hellenistic World in New Testament Times (written for The Interpreter's Bible), The Pioneer of Our Faith (1964), The Religion of the Bible (1960), and Religions of the World (1967); personal records, recommendations, and grade reports for religion majors; personal legal and financial papers; and blueprints of the original plans for St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Charlottesville, Va. Topics in correspondence include Biblical exegesis, particularly New Testament Greek and translation and interpretation of obscure or difficult passages; critiques and reviews of McCasland's articles as well as those of colleagues; scholarly publication and particularly McCasland's efforts to have By the Finger of God published; book sales; teaching of religion in public schools; McCasland's terms as vice-president, Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis, and president, National Association of Biblical Instructors; World War II and its effect on lives of former students, their fellow soldiers, and civilian populations in war zones; life in postwar Germany, both East and West, as experienced by former colleagues; establishment of a memorial professorship of religion at University of Virginia; the religion department and its students and courses; lecture series; committees and clubs; and Disciples of Christ Church.
