Abstract:
This collection (11550 items, dated 1939-1998) documents Dawson's professional and civic life. Materials include scrapbooks; reports; subject files; memoranda; and correspondence, especially from Floyd B. McKissick, Sr., and James E. Shepard. The collection details Dawson's medical practices, teaching, and board memberships at Lincoln Community Health Center, Lincoln Hospital, and Durham County General Hospital. It also documents his lengthy involvement with Meharry Medical College, George W. Hubbard Hospital, the National Medical Society, the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness and its North Carolina branch, the Old North State Medical Society, North Carolina Central University, and the Mutual Savings & Loan Association. The collection also contains 35 color photographs and 48 negatives. Acquired as part of the John Hope Franklin Collection of African and African-American Documentation.(00-320)
The addition to the collection (8860 items, dated 1946-1997 and n.d.) contains financial materials, correspondence, memoranda, newspaper clippings and magazine articles, and 300 photographs that continue to document Dawson's medical career. This addition includes materials from Dawson's real estate ventures. These include owning apartments with the firms Dawson and Watts and then Dawson, Watts and Cleland (1970s) and building apartments with the firm Century Oaks, Ltd. (1977-1981). The majority of the 2 black-and-white and 297 color photographs appear to be of family. One tintype is included of an unidentified woman wearing what may be a wedding dress (n.d.). (01-073)
