Abstract:

Chiefly memoranda including memoranda of telephone conversations; together with correspondence, reports, and printed material, created or collected during FitzGerald's service with U.S. and international economic assistance programs (1948-1962), and to a lesser extent with his service with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (1945-1947) and the Brookings Institution (1962-1966). Major subjects and events documented include food relief efforts in Europe following World War II, Marshall Plan, foreign economic assistance during the Eisenhower administration including the Food-For-Peace program, and the first year of foreign aid programs of the Kennedy administration including the creation of the Agency for International Development and the Peace Corps. Agencies and institutions documented include the Food and Agriculture Division of the Economic Cooperation Administration, Organization for European Economic Cooperation, Mutual Security Agency, Foreign Operations Administration, International Cooperation Administration, and Council on Foreign Relations. Persons represented include C. Douglas Dillon, Paul Hoffman, Herbert Hoover, Clarence B. Randall, and Harold Stassen.
