Abstract:

Chiefly personal and professional papers (ca. 1918-1973) of George Vernadsky, with substantial material relating to members of his family, especially his wife, Nina, father, the scientist Vladimir I. Vernadskiĭ, mother, Natalii︠a︡ E. Vernadskai︠a︡, and sister, Nina V. Toll. Includes voluminous correspondence involving George and Nina Vernadsky's colleagues, friends, and relatives, many of them historians, and members of the Bromberg, Ilʹinskiĭ, Rodichev, Romberg, and Starit︠s︡kiĭ families; numerous files about G. Vernadsky's professional contacts with journals, conferences, organizations, and publishers, in the fields of Russian, Byzantine, and Asian history; and mss. of writings, consisting mostly of articles, lectures, essays, books, and notes by G. Vernadsky, but also comprised of texts by Yury Arbatsky, I︠A︡kov Bromberg, Loren Graham, Petr Savitskiĭ, and Vladimir Vernadskiĭ.

Other papers include documents, among them 16th and 17th-century records from the area of Tambov and Penza, Russia; photos, mainly of G. and N. Vernadsky and their friends and relations; subject files on G. Vernadsky's family activities and focusing on such diverse aspects of his professional activities in Europe and America as Eurasianism, Khondakov Institute (known as Seminariĭ im. N.P. Kondakova and later as Institut imeni N.P. Kondakova) in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Yale University, and various conferences and associations; offprints, journals, clippings, and pamphlets, reflecting the activities of G. Vernadsky and his father; glass negatives; and memorabilia. Correspondents include Boris Bakhmetev, Henri Bergson, Roman Jakobson, Michael Karpovich, Nikolaĭ Losskiĭ, Vladimir Nabokov, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Geroid T. Robinson, Michael Rostovzeff, Petr Savitskiĭ, Petr Struve, Ivan Turgenev, and Aleksandr Vasilʹev.
