Abstract:

Papers of Alice Duer Miller consist of manuscripts of her stories, poems, plays, essays (some on feminist and suffragist issues), screenplays, and radio broadcasts; and family and literary correspondence, 1890s-1940s, particularly correspondence relating to her novel, WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, and the film that was made from it. Also, clippings of articles about her, obituaries, wedding invitation and announcement, bibliographies of her work, a scrapbook containing typescripts of poems and some correspondence, and mathematics notebooks and papers, 1890s, from her student years at Barnard College. Papers of Elizabeth Meads Duer include a manuscripts of poems; DAVIDA, a novel; a story, "A Hero of the Ranks;" and clippings from magazines of published stories, ca. 1901-1906. Papers of Caroline King Duer include manuscripts of poetry, stories, articles, autobiographical writings, and plays. Also, World War I letters written from France, 1915-1918; correspondence relating to her writing career; and correspondence relating to her objections to the movie made from WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, 1944, with related clippings.

Genealogical writings, ca. late 19th century through mid-20th century, about the Duer family, and photographs of Duer family members including many of Alice Duer Miller are also included. Of note are photographs showing Alice Duer Miller with Harpo Marx (without costume), Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, Charles Lederer, Neysa McMeir, Beatrice Kaufman, and other unidentified people on the beach and in a country house. Alice Duer Miller shared a house at Antibes with Alexander Woollcott, Harpo Marx, and others.
