Correspondence, diaries, speeches and writings, research material, reports, surveys, legal documents, biographical data, school papers, certificates, and photographs pertaining to Lewin's career in the field of psychoanalysis. Documents his research on compulsive behavior, elation, psychoanalytic education, and dreams; and his work as cofounder of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, New York, N.Y. (1931), president of the New York Psychoanalytic Society, New York, N.Y. (1936-1937) and the American Psychoanalytic Association (1946-1947), director of the American Psychoanalytic Association survey of psychoanalytic education (1955-1961), and professor of psychoanalysis and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh (1962-1971).

Includes notes from Lewin's studies under Adolf Meyer at Johns Hopkins University, a letter (1926) containing an account of a visit paid by Lewin and his wife to the Freud family, letters from Felix Frankfurter concerning efforts to aid European psychoanalysts in Axis countries (1930s), Lewin's psychological evaluation of German prisoners of war (1945), and his chairmanship of the American Psychoanalytic Association's Freud centenary celebrations (1956). Includes mss. and correspondence regarding Lewin's book, The Image and the Past (1969), and his translation of Karl Abraham's book, On Character and Libido Development (1966), and writings concerning Lewin's life and contributions to psychoanalysis by Jacob A. Arlow, Lawrence S. Kubie, and Jerry O'Mara.
