Abstract:

Correspondence, interviews, notes, research materials, drafts and revisions of articles, clippings, unpublished manuscripts, pamphlets, printed materials, newspaper columns, book reviews, photographs, contact prints, and audiovisual material, chiefly 1948-1970. The collection reflects Hamblin's professional career first as a researcher, then as a correspondent, bureau chief, and finally as a staff writer for Life magazine.

The Life file includes Hamblin's coverage of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon and her interviews with all the astronauts and other major personnel associated with the Apollo flights, chiefly Neil Armstrong, Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, and Mike Collins and their families.

Also noteworthy in this series is an unpublished biography of Neil Armstrong by his mother, Mrs. Steven (Viola) Armstrong and extensive correspondence with Life editor Gene Farmer, with whom Hamblin was in the process of writing the book, First on the moon.

Also in the collection are Hamblin's articles from the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) gazette and the Red Cross courier relating to United States troop conditions while she served as an American Red Cross staff correspondent in the Southwest Pacific theater of World War Two between 1944 and 1948.

Also included are an unpublished biography of Sophia Loren written by Hamblin, and newspaper columns by her father, Allen W. Hamblin, from the Bedford (Iowa) times-press, and by her sister, Mary Ovrom, from various Iowa newspapers.
