Resumo:

The papers contain the manuscript draft of "Fruit and nut trees: an Arbor-Day plea."

Correspondence refers primarily to his literary work for Youth's Companion and other periodicals; describes his writing method and story ideas including "Significant hummingbirds"; and expresses willingness to rework stories and resubmit rejected ones; and serves as an intermediary between his sister Mary Abigail Roe and a friend and his publishers.

He states his views on observance of the Sabbath and Sunday newspapers; mentions a trip with Henry Mills Alden, and proposed trips to Santa Barbara and New Jersey, and hospitality in Charleston, S.C.; describes horticultural efforts; refers to financial difficulties; sends thanks and regrets; and responds to autograph requests.
