Abstract:

Contains correspondence, manuscripts of writings and speeches, reports, memoranda, minutes, letters of recommendation, newspaper clippings, teaching material, grant proposals, and other papers relating to Fairbank's career as teacher, scholar, and administrator. Correspondence with colleagues, students, university officials, and officers of professional associations reflects his focus on the central themes of modern Chinese history (China's foreign relations, the role of tradition in the process of modernization, the rise of the nationalist and communist movements) and his involvement in the development of East Asian studies as an academic discipline. Includes articles, speeches, interviews, reviews, and correspondence relating to the publication of books (including Cambridge History of China).

Also contains papers relating to Fairbank's administrative duties as Director of the East Asian Research Center (later the Fairbank Center); materials dealing with the investigation of China specialists (including Fairbank) during the McCarthy Era; and papers pertaining to his participation in various professional organizations, including the Association for Asian Studies, the American Historical Association, and the Committee on American-East Asian Relations (AEAR). The materials relating to the AEAR are predominantly from the files of its chairman, Ernest May.
