Abstract:

The papers consist chiefly of letters from Newell to his mother, Susan Newell, Orlando, Fla. He discusses his activities at the University of Virginia, particularly classes, examinations, and grades; finances; sports, especially tennis; professors; and loneliness as an outsider, desire to join a fraternity, and thoughts of transferring back to Rollins College.

Newell also mentions the Jefferson Society, work on the Virginia Law Review, the Raven Society, the YMCA, speakers including John R. Mott, the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson, the Curtis bi-plane exhibition, 1912, a co-ordinate college for women, a fire at the Corner, and a student vigilance committee to prevent burglaries.

The collection also contains Newell's memoranda book, letters of his brother Sidney P. Newell to his mother regarding visits to relatives on Long Island, in Baltimore, and in Washington, some miscellaneous family letters, two poems and two cyanotypes.
