Notes: The Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope was a separate institution to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and to the Royal Greenwich Observatory. In its last days, Royal Observatory Cape was administered by the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The collection represents many Royal Observatory Cape records as sent to Greenwich in the early years of this century. Records from 1923 until ca. 1968 are not generally represented in this collection. The correspondents list is nit exhaustive. Researachers interested in a particular period are invited to write to the Royal Greenwich Observatory Archivist at the listed address if they are interested in a particular individual whose name does not appear, but who could possibly have been in correspondence with the person or institution responsible for creating the class.

Comprises registers, journals, observation books, reduction ledgers, bound volumes of correspondence, notebooks, and miscellaneous papers, including: A. Various papers related to the workings of the observatory over its 150 years of operation. B. Materials relating to important topics and events, such as the establishment of the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope; returns of Halley's comet 1835 and 1910; extension of the Abbi de La Caille's arc of the meridian; work on the Carte du Ciel and publication of the Cape Astrographic Catalogue; Gill's determination of the solar parallax from observations of minor planets; Jones's determination of the solar parallax from observations of Eros; publication of the Cape Photographic Cartalogue for the epoch 1950.0; creation of the South African Astronomical Observatory. C. The following is a partial list of the names of correspondents and others as they appear in the handlist to this class of papers in RGO Archives. It must be remembered that the handlist itself is not necessarily an exhaustive list of names as they appear in the papers themselves. Researchers interested in a particular period are invited to write to the RGO Archivist at the above address if they are interested in particular individuals whose names do not appear below, but who could possibly have been in correspondence with the person or institution responsible for creating the class.)
