Correspondence, journal kept by Sherman in California during the Mexican War, ms. drafts of portions of his Memoirs (1875), documents, printed matter, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, maps, photographs, and memorabilia relating to Sherman's pre-Civil War career as an Army officer, banker in San Francisco, Calif., attorney in Leavenworth, Kan., and superintendent of Louisiana State Seminary for Learning and Military Academy at Alexandria; his service during the Civil War in the Vicksburg campaign, the Atlanta campaign, the march to the sea, and the Carolinas campaign; his post-war service as lieutenant general (1866-1869) and as general and commander-in-chief (1869-1883); and his retirement in St. Louis and New York. Correspondents include George Bancroft, William W. Belknap, Braxton Bragg, Don Carlos Buell, James A. Garfield, Ulysses S. Grant, Henry W. Halleck, Winfield S. Hancock, James A.
